The Luck Of The Irish Runs Out For The Celtics
|
18 Janaury 1997. Washington Bullets 112, Boston Celtics 106 (record: 20-18)
Game leaders: Webber (25 points), Webber (9 rebounds), Strickland (9 assists)This was a game of runs, and luckily for the Bullets, they had them when it counted. Webber overcame a horrible game the previous night to torch the Celtics for 25 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. The Bullets also got key contributions from Calbert Cheaney (14 points on 7 of 10 shooting, plus 8 rebounds) and the bench (Chris Whitney and Jaren Jackson each had 10 points) to come through in the end.
It wasn't an easy task. Feeling a little sluggish from the previous night's slug-fest with the Heat, the Bullets fell behind early (36-25 after one quarter), but a 37-18 second quarter put the Bullets back in command. The Celtics made a late charge and tied the game at 106. Then, things got truly bizarre.
Calbert Cheaney - Alive and Unharmed Someone once jokingly asked early in the season, "Who kidnapped Calbert Cheaney?" Well, he's back, and he's taking his opponents to task and blending in nicely. Webber made a tough mini-hook in the lane with two players grabbing his arms to give the Bullets the lead, and Webber got the foul call and went to the free throw line. However, he bricked the free throw. Luckily, Harvey Grant tapped the ball back outside, and Webber gathered it. The Celtics fouled him, but it was two more bricks for Webber. Grant once again tapped the ball back to Webber, who passed to Howard, who passed to Strickland, who was fouled. (Follow that?) Strickland made both free throws, and the Bullets had a comfortable 4-point lead.
Still, this just seemed like way too close of a game for the Bullets to be playing against a team that only has 9 wins and doesn't have a true center. The way the Bullets allowed the Celtics to get back in the game in the fourth quarter, with sloppy ball handling and passing against a pressure defense, certainly left many of us frustrated. *sigh* I hope this team is learning from these escapades, because there's only so much my heart can take.
