Bullets Fall Into Nets' Trap, Get Blitzed Inside And Outside

15 February 1997. New Jersey Nets 107, Washington Bullets 86 (record: 23-27)
Game leaders: Strickland (18 points), Howard (12 rebounds), Strickland (8 assists)

On the back-end of a home-and-home series with the Nets, the Bullets completely forgot everything that got them their 125-107 win the previous night. Washington Post sports writer J.A. Adande described the situation best: "They [The Bullets] failed in elemental aspects of the game. Basic things such as boxing out. Remedial things such as boxing out the shooter on a free throw."

Do They Grab The Ring?
Despite the recent bumbling of the Bullets (losing 9 of 12), they still are within striking distance of the playoffs. Washington Post sports columnist Michael Wilbon asks, are the Bullets ready to seize this golden opportunity?
With play like that, it's no wonder they lost the game.

The statistical boxscore shows the Bullets lost in practically every phase of the game. The Nets outrebounded them 52-36. The Nets grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and forced 18 Bullets turnovers. The Bullets only had 3 players (Strickland, Howard, Cheaney) in double figures.

Even worse for the Bullets is that they lost guard Tim Legler in the first half. He strained the posterior capsule, an area of soft tissue in the back of the knee that connects to the ligaments, in his right knee when his leg was pinned back in a a chase for a rebound after a missed free throw. Luckily, this type of injury does not also affect the ACL, which he had repaired last year. However, doctor's are suggesting that Legler rest the leg for at least 3 weeks, meaning he'll miss at least the next 10 games of the season. Another good shooter lost.
