Tax Time Musings

Yup, it's tax day here in the U.S. Did you get your return in today?

A Retraction On My Bad Memory

I screwed up in a previous column, dated March 28. (No, this doesn't reflect on the accuracy of my tax return.) I said the Bullets had beaten the Cavaliers all three times this year. I lied. They lost an overtime game in November at Landover, but have won the two games since then.

How does this affect the tiebreaker? See what was written following the Hornets game. They still have the advantage, although I don't want it to come down to having a one game lead over the Cavs before the final game of the season. (Though, if I do my math right, the Bullets still win the tiebreaker over the Cavs if that happens.)

The Disappearing Info Is Already Happening

In my last column, I talked about the eventual disappearance of Washington Post articles on the Bullets. Well, it turns out ESPNet Sportszone isn't treating me any better, especially with relation to its multimedia (i.e., audio, video) clips. The stuff I linked to following the Bulls/Bullets game have already expired and disappeared. So, for you late web surfers, you never got to see it.

Boo on ESPNet Sportszone. I know disk space may be limited, but the promise is not being fulfilled.

Hooray For NBA.com

However, it's time for me to sing the praises of another NBA site which is doing things right. When it first opened two years ago, NBA.com was a hastily produced web site with little useful content, heavily sanitized for public consumption and very little value. (IMO)

No more. About a year ago, after getting the feel of going online, they got it right. There is so much good information at the site, most of it permanent, that it's a great resource. They make the players accessible and bring a very good multimedia experience straight to the Nethead.

They've also done a good job at maintaining the currency of information on each team site and the main site, something they failed at miserably during the first season. It's often worthwhile to visit the main site daily, because there is usually something of interest from some team, even if it isn't the Bullets.

And The Bullets Site

What about the Bullets site? While I don't necessarily like the background GIF they've chosen, it's still a fine site for information. Mind you, the information is always a bit sanitized, so you can always count on me to give you the straight dope on what's really going on and what they should consider doing.

But they provide you with informational gems like reminiscing about the improbable 1978 championship, a history summary from the franchise's founding, notes on the Fab Duo, and the Team Theater of audio and video clips. Great stuff.

So, don't forget to visit there every so often. But remember, the truth, no matter how unpleasant, is spoken here. And as the Bullets improve in the future, *knock on wood* you will get the good, with an occasional bad note slipped in, noted with frequency here. Please continue to visit.
