The Search For A New Coach Ends

The door had barely finishing closing behind fired coach Jim Lynam and the Bullets begun their coaching search before the Bullets had their new man for the coaching position - Bernie Bickerstaff. It was one of the worst-kept secrets over All Star weekend.

Bickerstaff resigned as president of the Denver Nuggets franchise on Monday, February 10. Then, he arrived in DC to sign on the dotted line, be introduced at a news conference, and then conduct his first practice with his new charges.

The big question that remains is: is Bickerstaff capable of molding this team, at least in the short-term, into a playoff-contending team? It's going to take time, that's for sure. Washington Post sports columnist Michael Wilbon seems to think that Bernie might be able to bring that necessary level of discipline to this team.

Who is Bernie Bickerstaff? For those who didn't live through the Bullets championship and playoff years, you may need a new introduction to the man. But is Abe trying to recapture past glories, when a more modern approach is needed? Is this the typical all-in-the-family approach of Abe Pollin, as ESPNet Sportszone NBA columnist David Aldridge hypothesizes? On these, I'm slightly undecided (more on the first than on the second - I generally concur on the second).

And what about the mess that Bickerstaff has left behind in Denver. Is he to blame? David Krieger of the Scripps-Howard News Service has a sarcastic look at the mess that remains in Denver.

Bickerstaff is now the coach, for at least the rest of this season. He'll get his shot at turning this team around. With the recent struggles of other playoff contenders, the Bullets may get their shot. If they can only reach for that next rung as a group...
