Every year, hundreds of first-time drunk driving offenders take advantage of the opportunity to take a safety course to educate them on the dangers of driving while impaired. This is a very common course for people to take. After he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, Howard decided to take the safety course.
Because Howard completed the court-sponsored driver safety/education course, the D.C. corporation counsel's office has dropped the charge of driving while intoxicated against Howard. Howard's attorney, William R. Martin, said that the matter was an "unfortunate incident." And it could have been more unfortunate if someone had been injured or killed while he was driving in that condition.
Mr. Martin also added, "It's clear to us, having consulted with experts in the field, that Juwan Howard does not have a drinking problem." Amen to that.
