Assessing The Damage And Promise In The Aftermath
|
The 1996-97 season is over for the Washington Bullets, but the analysis is just beginning. They showed themselves well down the stretch, and they gave the Bulls everything the Bulls could handle. But it wasn't enough, so the question remains, what is enough?I've started my assessment of the team, though it's only the first analysis of many to come. Just some quick notes on what I saw and thought about the close of the season, in particular the Bulls series.
The Washington Post is also laying the past to rest and looking to build up the future. Sports columnist Thomas Boswell talked about the Bullets past, before the new Wizards name puts it to rest, while sports columnist Michael Wilbon talked about the future promise held out by the Bullets/Wizards.
We also get to read about the sad saga of why popular sports anchor/play-by-play announcer Steve Buckhantz was not allowed to do the play-by-play for the third game of the series on local TV. And once, again, we live through the pain of the loss on Wednesday night. So close, yet so far.
Now, we look to the future. The article above hinted that the logo/uniform announcement will come in mid-May. Also, to remind you (and myself), the Bullets don't have a first round pick this year (they gave it up to keep Juwan Howard, Tracy Murray, and Lorenzo Williams). So, we wait and see what the off-season has in store. Then, hopefully, we break in a brand-new arena with a new winning tradition.
