As Bullets Prep For Off-Season Moves, Wes Says He Stays

The Bullets are now getting down to business with their off-season preparations. As a prelude, Bullets beat reporter for the Washington Post, J.A. Adande, sat down with general manager Wes Unseld to talk about the Bullets offseasons.

MCI Center Delayed?
This is an old news item, but Pollin won't commit to opening the arena on time. I don't believe it one bit, it's just him covering his butt in case there are delays in opening. But the NBA and NHL offices will be displeased if the arena is not ready in time.
One big item out of the interview is that Wes has no intention of stepping out of his role as general manager for the team. He has made a commimtment to the team when he took over as general manager, and he plans on fulfilling that commitment.

That doesn't mean that there isn't a possibility that Bernie could move upstairs as director of basketball operations, a position which some teams fill for player and team evaluations. The Bullets do have a director of scouting, and Susan O'Malley fills the role of team president, so there may not be room for such a position in the Bullets organization.

And to be honest, I don't expect Bernie to move into management. He did a very good job coaching and getting the players to buy into his offensive and defensive philosophies. He's likely to stay as coach until the point when he might wear out his welcome.

It should also be noted that Wes has his ideas on what the team should do; I have my own ideas. I hope to have the column put together shortly (which probably means before the end of the month, given my current workload). But don't expect many changes in the team roster, mostly because they are WAY over any salary cap the league might put in place. The Bullets core you see today will likely be in place next year as well.
