Assistant Coach Bob Staak Fired

The Washington Wizards continue to clean out the house that previous coach Jim Lynam built. They fired assistant coach Bob Staak yesterday, and the remaining assistant coach, Clifford Ray, may not be far behind, as the Washington Post reported.

Staak served as the interim coach for one game (a loss to Denver) between the firing of Lynam and the hiring of Bernie Bickerstaff in February. He wasn't a bad coach by any means, and he was loud and authoritative on the bench. His voice boomed whenever he called out plays.

But head coaches like to have their own assistants that they know and trust, and Bernie will be no exception. The Wizards haven't hired any replacements, but expect a couple of assistants from the Denver Nuggets last year to joing Bernie in Washington. Expect more announcements later.

No one is saying whether Clifford Ray will also be fired, but he's currently on vacation and unavailable. The Wizards will sort out his situation when he returns.

Don't cry for Bob Staak. His name has been mentioned in passing as an outside candidate for the Golden State Warriors job, if the front-runners continue to turn down the job. (See the end of this David Aldridge article on ESPNet Sportszone.) And to be honest, Jim Lynam wouldn't necessarily be a bad fit out there, either.
