As Murray Recovers, The Wizards Hire Their Assistant Coaches For Next Year

The Wizards finally have the signatures on the dotted lines, and they can now announce the three new presences on the bench for the team. Washington Post sports writer J.A. Adande provides a good summary on their background and expertise. General manager Wes Unseld interviewed them earlier this month at the pre-draft camp in Chicago and apparently gave the thumbs up on all three: Jim Brovelli, Mike Brown and John Outlaw.

The Wizards also hired Wes' son, Wes Jr., as a basketball operations assistant. Whatever that means.

Interestingly enough, my reading on their responsibilities shows that only one of them, Jim Brovelli, is a true assistant coach in terms of bench responsibilities. He'd be an Xs and Os kind of guy and provide a lot of input to coach Bernie Bickerstaff. The others get responsibilities such as advance scouting, player tutelage, and player relations. But all three should be on the bench during game time, I'd guess.

The article gave an update on Tracy Murray's recovery and rehabilitation from wrist surgery. The soft cast on his wrist was replaced with a hard cast, Tracy has clearance to work out, as long as no pressure is put on the wrist. So far, everything is going according to the anticipated rehabilitation schedule.
