The Wizards Aren't Expecting Much From This Draft
|
It's relatively quiet in the Washington Wizards front office, but that doesn't mean they are not busy. Just because they don't have a first round pick doesn't mean they can slack. Because productive players can be found in the second round. In fact, it may be tougher to draft in the later rounds. Yes, you know the player you select will have some major flaws. But if you do your homework better than other teams, you can find that gem in the rough. So, that's what the Wizards' brain trust is doing.
Another avenue to improve the team is through a trade. The Wizards figure in at least one possible deal, though it's unlikely to occur before the draft. As mentioned earlier, and now picked up by J.A. Adande of the Washington Post, there are some talks of dealing Muresan for Jayson Williams. Just don't hold your breath on this one. One nice thing: Jayson has been quoted as saying that he wouldn't mind playing in Washington.
Other odd bits published leading up to the draft:
- One of the oddest picks of all time? By the Bullets in 1966, according to this ESPNet feature. "The Baltimore Bullets drafted Michigan State's awesome football player, Bubba Smith in round 11." Luckily, they got Wes Unseld two years later.
- Rumors of possible trades are swirling in the few days before the draft.
