Free Agency Season Kicks Off - But Wither The Wizards?

At least this doesn't promise to be a busy free agent season for the Wizards. There are no key players to protect, and very few affordable players available as the team is already over the salary cap. But that doesn't mean the Wizards will be idle, as J.A. Adande of the Washington Post reports.

The Wizards will attempt to re-sign Tim Legler and Chris Whitney and will make an offer to Ben Wallace (though they are limited in how much they can offer by the bargaining agreement). The Wizards do not appear to have any interest in Jaren Jackson or Ashraf Amaya (who was cut just before the end of the season).

The Wizards do have a $1M salary cap exception that they can use on 1 or 2 players every other year. That exception is available this year, as they didn't use it last year to sign anyone. However, general manager Wes Unseld is being mum on who they might target with that exception. Probable targets would be a veteran front court player and/or outside shooter.

What should the Wizards do? Let us know on the mailing list, but I have a few of my own ideas.
